The Empress of Soul

The Empress of Soul

By any measure, Gladys Knight (born May 28, 1944) is one of the greatest America/R&B/Soul singers of all time. Her expressive, powerful voice became the model for two generations of singers from Jennifer Holliday to Alicia Keys, and her work with the Pips stands tall among the best Soul music of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

In addition to her music, she has succeeded as a songwriter, actress, businesswoman, humanitarian, and author.

  1. Great music JJ. Thanks for the heads-up.

By the way, what do you make of Aloe Blacc? His CDs seemed to be selling like anything at FNAC in Paris, but you can't even find him in the major Aussie music stores!

  2. Akseli: He is fantastic. He started out as an indie rapper in the '90s, but today his music contains elements of jazz, R&B, and soul second to none. This guy is Sam Cooke reincarnated and updated.

  5. Katherine: Sultry is the word!

KBF: We have shows like American Idol and other talent arenas, but when an "effortless" voice like hers hits the scene, it sings "Star." She is classic.
