Something to Think About

I found this entry from an 18th century almanac, written before the American Revolution:

O! ye unborn inhabitants of America! Should this page escape its destin’d conflagration at the year’s end, and these alphabetical letters remain legible, when your eyes behold the sun after he has rolled the seasons round for two or three centuries more, you will know that Anno Domini 1758, we dream’d of your times.

  1. Makes one wonder just what we are dreaming of, eh?

  2. Ditto to Empty Nester's comment. What are creating now for generations to come? The quote brings home the awesome responsibility we have.

  3. I agree with both of you. I do feel like they dreamed of what we once had, not of what we have now. But that's another post, I guess.

  4. '...we dream'd of your times.' - The romantic in me prefers to believe that 'dreaming' of something can only possibly conjure up positive images! The realist in me acknowledges that dreams are often only good friends, nothing more. This post certainly got me thinking JJ - as Galen Pearl said, what an awesome responsibility we have!

  5. It feels good sitting here reading those words and knowing that way back then somebody was thinking of me, and well everyone else too! Just as I too have sat in awe of their past and also of those to come a long time from now! Great mindful post JJ!

  6. Welcome to Sepia Saturday, although for some reason my comment wouldn't post there, so I'm also putting it here for you to see!

Oh JJ this is cool. When I saw JJ on the list at Sepia Saturday I thought...hooray he's going to share some of his own family's old photos! I had no idea who all your relatives are! LOL Very cool! I sure hope to see more here too!

  7. I can't figure out if they mean the future will be positive or negative. But whatever it is..... great dreaming.

  8. emilene: Of course. Definitely positive.

Karen S: I think you are correct. That is the point. We should not abandon those who will follow. And yes, yes. I will get around to posting those pictures!

    Manzi: Definitely positive!

  9. FanaticoUm: I thought so. I agree with Galen. We have the awesome responsibility of caring for those who follow us.

  10. I'll bet they never dreamt that America would be in the turmoil that it is today, with all the infighting in Washington, people losing their homes, and savings, and unemployment rates so high! I think their dream was of a land of milk and honey, not sour grapes!!

  11. I think it's amazing and it makes me smile, that people so long ago were thinking ahead and doing their very best to create a society that they would be proud to have their posterity live in. If only our society today would do the same, instead of try to tear it down piece by piece.

  12. Miriam: I could not agree more.

Judie: I agree. They used to disagree on how to best SERVE the people. Now, they fight over how much they can dupe the people and get away with it. Being a positive guy, I would have to believe things will eventually get better.
