A Voice From the Past

grace

When I was still living in New Hampshire, I attended a gig featuring singer Grace Potter. She had formed an indie band and was selling her albums to the audience. Today, she is achieving some recognition nationwide.

I love her voice. She reminds me of Janis Joplin, and I still cannot pin down her genre. I guess alternative rock is a good label, but I hear blues, which I also love. Here is a sample of her music:

  1. Oh she's so much prettier than Janis was, (great video too) and their styles are nearly the same. She's really good, but Janis still today rocks a part of my soul that is untouchable by any other. Did I ever mention in one of my high school creative classes my teacher had us listen most of the hour to Janis, and then immediately write our feelings! I still think of it after all these years, each time I hear Janis.

    1. Karen: Janis was in a world of her own. She holds a special place in everyone's heart who watched her grow as a performer. Janis has a raspier voice, but Grace really is pretty cool - and just pretty. When I saw her, she was still a teenager. I hope with all my heart that she handles celebrity well.

  2. I first became aware of Grace Potter on this song:

Granted, she is not the main act. She is simply featured, but she blew me away. It was clear that she has an amazing voice and talent.

I doubt she has settled down and decided on what genre she will sing in. And she might never. I remember Garth Brooks saying, "I might sing country, but I am not a country singer. I can sing anything." That is true. Many artists yearn to escape being pigeonholed into any one thing. Maybe she will be the one to do it.

    1. Robin: When I saw her years ago, I thought she was a folk singer. She caught my attention again when I heard her sing a rock song. It's time to buy some more music!

  3. Beats me what I'd call her music but if you say alternative rock, it good enough for me. She's good and I like the accompanying gals in the background in the video.

    1. Manzie: I agree. I never saw those ladies before, but they do add a great deal to the overall performance.
